Kids play, learn at new East Rec Center programs

Unlocking the Wonders of STEAM: Empowering Young Minds through Hands-On Exploration

In the heart of Winona, a hub of learning and discovery has emerged, where elementary and middle school students are immersed in the captivating world of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). Through a series of "mini adventures," these young minds are being ignited with a passion for hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and creative expression.

Unleashing Creativity and Critical Thinking in Winona's Youth

Kaleidoscopic Creations and Melting Mysteries

At the East Recreation Center, students have been engaging in a variety of STEAM-focused activities that challenge their minds and spark their imaginations. From crafting kaleidoscopes with precision and care to conducting experiments that explore the effects of heat on everyday objects, these young learners are diving headfirst into the realms of science and art.The hands-on nature of the STEAM programming has been a particular highlight, as students not only observe but also actively participate in the learning process. By making predictions, testing hypotheses, and analyzing the results, they are developing critical thinking skills that will serve them well in their academic and personal pursuits.

Prototyping Innovative Solutions

Delving deeper into the engineering aspect of STEAM, students have been tasked with imagining and creating miniature prototypes of tools designed to accomplish specific tasks. Whether it's a device to carry rocks or a mechanism for swimming in a pool, these young innovators are harnessing their creativity and problem-solving abilities to bring their ideas to life."It's been really fun to watch the kids make a prediction or hypothesize and either be correct in their hypothesis or maybe not correct, and then figure out what was different or what was the same as what they thought would happen," says City of Winona Parks and Recreation Coordinator Ali Mayer, who has witnessed the students' enthusiasm and growth firsthand.

Decoding Mysteries and Crafting Rube Goldberg Machines

The STEAM programming at the East Recreation Center extends beyond the realms of science and art, delving into the realms of technology and engineering. In a secret agent-themed mini adventure, elementary students are learning the art of decoding clues and solving riddles, honing their problem-solving skills in a captivating and engaging manner.Meanwhile, middle school students are set to embark on a journey of invention, where they will collaborate to create a Rube Goldberg machine – a complex, interwoven system of cascading parts that accomplishes a simple task. This hands-on activity not only challenges their engineering prowess but also fosters teamwork and creative problem-solving.

Exploring the Intersection of Art and Color

The STEAM programming at the East Recreation Center is not limited to the traditional STEM subjects; it also embraces the artistic realm. Earlier this summer, elementary students participated in an art and color-themed mini adventure, where they delved into the world of complementary colors, shapes, patterns, and blending."We did an [art] gallery walk on the last day, and it was so fun to watch the participants pick their pieces of art they wanted to show their family members," Mayer recounts, highlighting the sense of pride and accomplishment that the students experienced.

Survival Skills and Imaginary Scenarios

The STEAM programming at the East Recreation Center is not just about academic exploration; it also incorporates real-world skills and imaginative scenarios. Earlier this summer, middle school students had the opportunity to learn survival skills, including basic knot-tying and identifying essential food and water supplies for a backpack. These skills were then put to the test in an imaginary world where zombies had risen, challenging the students to apply their newfound knowledge in a captivating and engaging manner. This unique blend of practical skills and imaginative storytelling helps to foster a well-rounded understanding of the world around them.
